Truex angrily denies there's any agreement

The Charlotte Observer

Saturday, Jul. 26, 2008

CLERMONT, Ind. - Despite a report by ESPN.com to the contrary on Saturday, Sprint Cup driver Martin Truex Jr. has not agreed to any contract extension with Dale Earnhardt Inc.

Several sources close to the driver and his representatives on Saturday night adamantly denied a report by ESPN.com that Truex had agreed to a two-year deal.

The Charlotte Observer and ThatsRacin.com have been attempting to obtain confirmation this week of a Truex deal, but DEI officials have declined to comment.

In a brief interview Saturday evening with The Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, Truex expressed outrage at the report.

"It's (expletive). I don't know what the hell (the reporter) is talking about. He doesn't know what he's talking about," Truex said.

Earlier this season, DEI officials said they were exercising an option for a third season with Truex in 2009. However, Truex must still agree to the option or sign a new contract. Otherwise, he would be available to drive for another team next season.

Truex, 28, made the Chase for the Sprint Cup for the first time last season and remained in contention for a repeat appearance this year until a 150-point penalty for a rule violation at Daytona earlier this month dropped him to 17th in the standings.
