INDIANAPOLIS - Coral Gables, Fla., resident Helio Castroneves denied Wednesday that he is mulling a move to NASCAR.
"I was misinterpreted," Castroneves told The Miami Herald from his team's garage at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "Right now, IndyCar is where I want to be - winning the Indy 500 and the championship is what I want."
He was quoted in The Los Angeles Times as saying of a possible NASCAR future, "I won't deny that I'm thinking about it."
Castroneves backed off that comment, made while in L.A. for the "Dancing With The Stars" finale. "If you ask any driver, 'Do you ever think about NASCAR,' I'm sure they'll say yes," said Castroneves, a two-time Indy 500 winner.
"You need to see where you are in your life. I'm on a fantastic team. I love my team. Right now, only if it was an incredible opportunity would I leave this place."
Castroneves, 33, gained national fame by winning "Dancing with The Stars" last year and became a face of the IndyCar Series. He is in the final season of his contract with Penske Racing, but said he wants to re-sign.
Owner Roger Penske also fields three NASCAR Cup teams, but Castroneves said he has had no discussions about leaping to one of Penske's stock cars.
