State transportation officials will make it official today, renaming Speedway Boulevard into Bruton Smith Boulevard.
Official renaming ceremonies are scheduled for 11 a.m. today at the Rocky River Golf Course, off the road being named for the owner of nearby Lowes Motor Speedway.
The name change was approved in December. It was part of a series of concessions and changes made by Concord city and state officials, in an effort to convince Smith not to move the speedway out of Cabarrus County.
The renaming ceremony is taking place this week, in time for the major NASCAR races scheduled Saturday and Sunday evenings at the speedway.
