It's hard for Lowe's Motor Speedway president H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler to trump himself when it comes to creativity in promoting events at his track, but he might have done just that Wednesday.
Wheeler employed dogs in announcing he believes Carl Edwards will be "best in show" at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday night. Specifically, he imported "Princess" - a dog that does backflips - to represent his annual selection of a favorite.
"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog," Wheeler said. He called Edwards "a racer's racer" and cited the driver of the No. 99 Ford's success on intermediate tracks this year as well as his speed in tests at the Charlotte track as reasons for his selection.
"I believe we can do this," Edwards said in a telephone hook-up to the media gathering at the Wachovia Center's atrium in uptown Charlotte.
Wheeler used a pit bull terrier to represent his "dark horse" pick, Tony Stewart.
He also had a greyhound for Jimmie Johnson and a Doberman pincher to represent Kyle Busch, both of whom Wheeler said could win the 24th running of NASCAR's all-star event.
