closeInaugural Chicken Dance Championship part of Summer Shootout Series
Saturday, Jun. 07, 2008
CONCORD, N.C. (June 6, 2008) - Legends Car, Bandolero and Thunder Car drivers won't be the only ones battling for a championship during the 10-week Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout Series that starts Tuesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
"The Chicken Dance," a long-standing tradition during the weekly auto racing series, is being taken to a new level and fans will have the opportunity to show off their "clucking skills" during the inaugural Quaker Steak & Lube Chicken Dance Championship.
Each Tuesday night, the two best chicken dancers chosen from the crowd will be eligible to compete in the finals of the Quaker Steak & Lube Chicken Dance Championship during the series finale on Tuesday, Aug. 12.
The dance, popular at weddings, parties and sporting events, consists of body movements that imitate a chicken, such as arms flapping like wings and hand movements that imitate a chirping beak. Weekly winners will be selected based on style, accuracy and enthusiasm and will receive official Chicken Dance Winner T-shirts from Quaker Steak & Lube.
The 20 weekly winners will then square off in the Chicken Dance Showdown and the 2008 Chicken Dance Champion will be determined by crowd response. The champion will receive a $100 grand prize from Quaker Steak & Lube and a one-of-a-kind Chicken Dance Champion T-shirt.
"The Chicken Dance" was composed in the 1950s by Werner Thomas, a Swiss accordion player. It was originally named "Der Ententanz," which means "The Duck Dance" and later renamed "Der Volgertanz," or what is now known as "The Chicken Dance." It became an international hit during the 1970s when a Dutch band, De Electronica, released an instrumental version.
Admission to the Quaker Steak & Lube Summer Shootout is just $7 for adults. Children 6-12 are admitted for $3 and kids under 6 are free. Tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Parking is free.
Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action at 5:30 p.m. Feature racing begins at 7:30 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude by 10:15. For information, call the speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS or visit www.lowesmotorspeedway.com.
