On “Tradin’ Paint” on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio, hosts Steve Post and Danny “Chocolate” Myers spoke with Red Bull Racing Team development driver Scott Speed, who announced today that he will be teaming up with Bill Davis Racing to run a schedule of 11 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races this season under the direction of crew chief Slugger Labbe. Speed scored a tenth place finish in second ever NASCAR Craftsman Truck race last weekend at Martinsville Speedway.
Scott Speed: “As you know, Mike Skinner has been helping out with the Red Bull Team a lot and he’s kind of taken the role of mentor to A.J. [Allmendinger] and myself, helping us gain experience and helping us with advice. As that relationship has developed an opportunity came up to drive a fourth truck for Bill Davis Racing. We’re actually going to run directly alongside Mike Skinner for, I think, 11 more truck races this year, basically as many races as we can to try to get that experience. And working side-by-side with Mike we’re going to be able to really utilize his experience.” Speed: “We’re still planning on, at this time, running the full ARCA championship. It’s just about getting as many races as possible and we could fit in 11 truck races without conflicting anything at the moment. So we’re trying to get as much racing experience as we can. I think that I’m adapting to this form of racing a bit quicker than everyone expected so to compensate we start throwing more truck races at me and we’re going to keep this pace rolling. The great thing about this is there’s always an ability to move up the [learning] curve. If I become ready for a [NASCAR Sprint] Cup [Series] car two years from now or one year from now, whenever that is, we know that it is there waiting. So what we’re doing now is throwing as much stuff at me as we think I can handle.” Host, Steve Post: “Do you know who you’re working with over there crew chief-wise at Bill Davis Racing?” Speed: “Yeah, at the moment we’re going to be running with [Jacques] Villeneuve’s old crew chief, Slugger Labbe, who was at the test here in Iowa getting to know me and starting to develop a relationship. So it is kind of funny to be dealing with one of the other crew chiefs that has worked with one of the other three Formula 1 drivers that have done this so he’s already got a bit of a heads up on how we talk and understeer and oversteer and all that mumbo-jumbo.” “Tradin’ Paint” airs weekdays (11am-3pm ET) exclusively on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio channel 128.
