The annual Race City Pit Stop, a motorsports-themed event in downtown Mooresville, raised a record $7,000 for an end-of-life care home in Mount Mourne.
Last year, the all-volunteer event hoped to raise $2,500 to send one child to Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman for terminally and chronically ill children. Organizers raised $5,300, enough to send two children, said David Miller of Whit Miller Shoe Store & Repair in downtown Mooresville.
This year's proceeds went to Serenity House, which relies on community support, said Cheryl Pletcher, executive director of Carolina Comfort Coalition, which includes Serenity House and a future home in East Lincoln.
“The support of the Mooresville Downtown Commission and the community is awesome,” Pletcher said.
The event raised money through an auction of memorabilia donated by local motorsports teams and other businesses. Adams and Associates Architecture, Best Buy of Mooresville, Insurance Solutions and Whit-Miller were significant financial contributors, Pletcher said.
Fans in town for the May Speed Weeks at Lowe's Motor Speedway attended Race City Pit Stop from as far away as Idaho.
The event also featured about 20 NASCAR show cars, a live band and a “pit stop challenge” with firefighters and police officers as tire changers.
