MAGNY COURS, France - Felipe Massa of Ferrari was fastest in the first practice session for the French Grand Prix on Friday.
The Brazilian driver outpaced McLaren's Lewis Hamilton by more than seven-tenths of a second to set a fastest lap time of 1 minute, 15.306 seconds around the Circuit de Nevers.
Hamilton was a fraction quicker than teammate Heikki Kovalainen, while Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari was fourth.
BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica, coming off his first F1 victory at the Canadian GP, rounded out the top five with a best lap of 1:16.377.
Practice continued later Friday and Saturday morning, before qualifying on Saturday afternoon for Sunday's race.
Kubica holds a four-point advantage over Hamilton and Massa in the overall standings.
