Officials of Speedway Motorsports Inc. have chosen a name for the company's drag strip, being built as part of the Lowe's Motor Speedway complex near Charlotte, in Concord, N.C.
After reviewing more than 4,300 entries in a contest to name the facility, which is to host a National Hot Rod Association event in September, officials selected zMAX Dragway @ Concord as the name for the facility, which is under construction.
"We were overwhelmed by the response from race fans," said Bruton Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of SMI. "They suggested everything from Burnout Boulevard to The Southern Slingshot to The Main Drag."
Wanda Exum of Greensboro, N.C., and Carl Hackley of Charlotte submitted the winning entries. Each will receive VIP tickets to the inaugural NHRA Nationals on Sept. 11-14, four-night accommodations at The Embassy Suites in Concord, dinner for two at The Speedway Club and cash prizes.
A Charlotte-based subsidiary of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., zMAX produces and markets automotive lubricants.
Located on 125 acres of Lowe's Motor Speedway property adjacent to The Dirt Track, the dragway will feature a 34,000 square-foot starting-line tower with luxury suites and an additional 4,000 square feet of roof access for guests, the speedway said in a news release.
There also will be two pedestrian tunnels under the strip and a grandstand seating capacity of 30,000, speedway officials said.
