HAMPTON, Ga. - It appears former ChampCar Series star Max Papis is headed to NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series next season.
Germain Racing, which currently fields two NASCAR Truck series entries and one Nationwide team, has a teleconference scheduled Monday during which the team is expected to name Papis the driver of its new Cup team in 2009 with sponsor GEICO, multiple sources said Saturday.
Germain officials declined to comment, other than to confirm they have an announcement scheduled Monday about a Cup team, in which Papis is participating.
Papis, of Como, Italy, has driven in seven Nationwide races in his career and two Cup races this season, both road course events, in a Haas CNC Racing entry.
He is expected to drive enter at least 18 races in the No. 13 Toyota and that schedule could be expanded if additional sponsorship is obtained, sources said.
