closeNASCAR Sprint Cup driver Martin Truex Jr. has a challenge for his friends in the motorsports community, this one off the track.
His foundation is raising money for the Dove House Children's Advocacy Center's larger planned facility in Statesville.
Dove House provides services for sexually abused children and their non-offending family members in a home in downtown Statesville. Work on the larger location off Simonton Road is scheduled to begin in April or May.
At 6,400 square feet, the new home will be more than double the size of the one downtown. The home will be valued at $1.2 million to $1.5 million, but Dove House hopes to make it mortgage-free through ongoing community donations of labor, materials and money.
The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation launched its "TAG, You're It!" fundraising campaign this week. The foundation is "tagging" NASCAR team owners, drivers, crew chiefs and others in the motorsports community to contribute to the project.
Truex's foundation purchased the project's first engraved brick paver for $1,000 and hopes others will follow suit. A custom-etched message is engraved in each 10-inch hexagonal paver that will go in the walkways of the new center's meditation gardens.
