Mears can breath easier after solid run

Sunday, May. 06, 2007

RICHMOND, Va. -- Casey Mears’ 18th-place finish Sunday at Richmond International Raceway gave him a little breathing room in the top 35 car owner points.

Mears was in danger of falling outside the top 35 – which guarantees a team a spot in the 43-car field each week – but gained a spot to 34th.

Instead, Robert Yates’ No. 88 Ford team, driven by Ricky Rudd, has slipped to 35th, 34 points ahead of Evernham Motorsports’ No. 10 Dodge, which is in 36th.

Both of Yates’ teams may soon be in danger. The No. 38 Ford, driven by David Gilliland, slipped four spots to 29th after his 42nd place finish on Sunday.
