Hill climb is coming to Wolf Ridge

Sports car enthusiasts, race fans and anybody who likes to see cars doing something it looks like they ought not be doing should mark May 18-20 on their calendars.

That's when part of the road leading up to Wolf Ridge Ski Lodge near Mars Hill will become a 1.4-mile hill climb course that will feature 41 turns and an elevation change of more than 800 feet. One veteran described the course for the Wolf Ridge Hill Climb as the "love child" of courses used for climbs done previously at Chimney Rock and Beech Mountain.

Cars will be on display at the lodge on May 18. Admission to the races the next two days is free. The site is about 21/2 hours from Charlotte. Take Interstate 77 north to I-40 west. Take I-240 west around Asheville, exiting onto U.S. 19, 23 north via Exit 4A. Stay on this highway until the exit for Wolf Laurel Road and follow the signs for Wolf Laurel from there.

"This thing is awesome," Loden said. "I've never driven anything like it." Five more races are on Saturday's schedule.

• Defending Tri-County Motor Speedway track champion Ricky Bryant got his first victory of the season in Friday's late model feature at the track in Hudson. A 75-lap feature for late models tops this week's schedule at the track.
