Traffic challenge Friday night: Race, concert, football

Friday, Oct. 11, 2013

A NASCAR race, a concert and three high school football games will bring thousands of people into northern Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties Friday night, but officials say they expect no major traffic problems.

However, they advise motorists to expect some possible delays during the evening commute on Interstate 85 near Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“If all goes well, those events will be ending at different times,” says N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Glenn Stokes.

The Zac Brown Band will be in concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, with the NASCAR Dollar General 300 race taking place a few miles to the north at the speedway.

Meanwhile, high school football games are scheduled at Cox Mill, Jay M. Robinson and Central Cabarrus high schools, each within a few miles of the track.

Stokes says the football games should end about 9:30 p.m., the race around 10 p.m., and the concert about 11 p.m.

“If all that works well, we should have people leaving their events on a staggered basis,” he says.

The bigger problem might be during the evening commute, when fans headed to the speedway will be sharing I-85 with motorists headed home.

Officials advise evening commuters to avoid roads near the speedway after about 5 p.m.
