Truex to wear cast for fractured wrist suffered at Bristol

Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013

Martin Truex Jr. will have some added baggage the next two weeks as he attempts to secure a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

A magnetic resonance imaging test this week showed Truex suffered a fracture and sprain of his right wrist in an accident in Saturday night’s race at Bristol, Tenn. Doctors fit Truex with a special cast Tuesday, which he’ll wear indefinitely this season.

A statement from Truex’s Michael Waltrip Racing team said the cast would enable him to better grip the steering wheel over the season’s final 12 races.

NASCAR officials confirmed Tuesday that Truex was cleared to race with the cast.

Truex was collected in a multi-car wreck on Lap 448 of 500 Saturday night which sent his No. 56 Toyota hard into the outside wall. He was treated and released from the infield care center.

MWR has not determined if the team will have a substitute driver on hand for Sunday night’s Advocare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Truex is currently 14th in the series standings and holds one of two wild-card entries in the Chase based on wins – he has a victory this season.

Truex’s younger brother, Ryan Truex, posted an encouraging message for his brother on his Twitter account:

“Gonna be a challenging few weeks for MTJ racing with a cast ... I did the same in ’11 so if I can do it he should have no problem.”
