Notes: Ryan Newman out of Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014
Friday, Jul. 12, 2013
LOUDON, N.H. Although not a total surprise, Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner Tony Stewart confirmed on Friday that driver Ryan Newman will not return to the Cup organization in 2014.
Newman had signed a one-year deal that expires at the end of this season. After officially announcing Kevin Harvick's move to the organization next year, Stewart said SHR was not in position to run a fourth Cup team.
"We're not ready to expand to a fourth team," said Stewart. "Unfortunately, this will be the last year we have Ryan."
Danica Patrick also drives fulltime for SHR.
"I believe in him 100 percent," Stewart said of Newman. "I truly wish we were able to facilitate four teams."
Newman said he's "had a good run" at SHR.
"I look forward to the opportunity to make the Chase this season and win the championship. I do not know what my future holds," Newman said.
"There are organizations out there that are capable of winning races and championships and it is obvious there are seats that could potentially become available."
Busch 'living in the present'
Kurt Busch has already accomplished a lot this season, making it into the Top 10 in points with the single-car Furniture Row Racing team, but there is more work to do.
Busch wants to cement the Chase berth and have a chance to win the championship, but he also must consider his options for the future.
"Right now is the most important thing; living in the present," Busch said. "There are a lot of irons in the fire."
Logano kicks off foundation
Joey Logano announced the formation of his Joey Logano Foundation on Friday. The organization will host 200 members of the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Squad and their families this weekend at New Hampshire.
This weekend's event is one of five JLF events designed to serve individuals in race communities across the country. The JLF's mission is to inspire, mobilize and empower the "NASCAR nation" to improve the lives of children and families with life-altering needs in their communities.
JLF will host events Aug. 18 at Michigan; Sept. 1 at Atlanta; Oct. 12 at Charlotte; and Nov. 10 at Phoenix.
