It’s nearly party time in uptown Charlotte, and that means motorists planning to navigate their way through center city will have to contend with street closings as part of the annual Food Lion Speed Street event.
Charlotte transportation officials will close a number of uptown streets at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, with more closures coming Thursday morning.
Commuters will get their streets back Sunday morning.
It’s all being done so an estimated 400,000 fans can gather in Charlotte for a festival of racing Thursday through Saturday. There will be a variety of live entertainment, interactive displays, and appearances by some of the biggest names in NASCAR.
But there also are the street closings.
Linda Durrett of the Charlotte Department of Transportation says motorists who work uptown or plan to visit the center city this week should allow extra commute time; use the interchange on the John Belk or Brookshire freeways closest to their destination; and arrive and leave early from work, if possible.
Parking facilities will be accessible before 9 a.m., and Durrett says the best routes for east-west travel uptown will be Trade, Fifth and Sixth streets.
These roads are affected by closings from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Sunday:
Tryon Street: curb lanes closed between Fifth and Trade streets ... entire road between Trade and Fourth streets ... entire road between Fourth and Third streets ... entire road between Third Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard ... entire road between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and East Stonewall Street.
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard: between College and Caldwell streets (lanes will be open for parking deck access) ... westbound lane between South Caldwell and South Davidson streets.
Brevard Street: between Third Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (one lane of Brevard open, for access to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) ... between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Stonewall Street (one lane of Brevard remains open for parking garage entrance).
Levine Avenue of the Arts: between Church and Tryon streets (road will reopen from 4:30-6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, to allow a direct exit from The Green parking garage.
And these roads will be affected by closings from 9:30 a.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Sunday (roads will be reopened from 6-9:30 a.m. Friday for the morning commute):
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard: between Church and College streets (lanes open to access the loading dock at Wells Fargo).
