RICHMOND, Va. Two adult males were taken into custody by Henrico Police after a verbal argument that started in the infield of Richmond International Raceway turned into a physical altercation near the driver/owner motorhome lot late Friday night.
The two males taken into custody work for Richard Childress Racing, sources said, and confronted Nationwide Series driver Nelson Piquet Jr. and another man. The assault occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m., police said.
Police said one of the two adult male victims has a shoulder injury. Sources said Piquet was not the one injured.
The police said further information would not likely be available while the investigation continues.
The incident appears tied to a confrontation on pit road following Friday night's Nationwide Series race between Piquet and driver Brian Scott, who drives for RCR.
The two drivers had made contact during the race on the track and hit each other on pit road after the race was over. Scott walked over to confront Piquet near his car on pit road and video replays showed Piquet kicked Scott below the belt. The drivers and their respective crews then had to be separated by officials.
Both drivers were called to the NASCAR hauler after the race but at the time officials said no penalties were expected.
"I guess that just shows his character to hit somebody below the belt," Scott said after the race. "More than anything it's just an accumulation of a lot of racing together and him always racing me dirty."
The two drivers apparently had a disagreement during the race earlier this month at Martinsville, Va.
"We both just got frustrated with each other and, you know, things happened," Piquet said. "We both got angry."
RCR issued the following statement early Saturday morning:
"We are aware an incident took place outside of the track's infield following Friday night's NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway involving members of our team; and others from another team. We are cooperating with the local authorities in this matter."
