Kyle Busch’s troubles in Kansas continue

NASCAR’s hottest driver ran into problems Sunday at what’s become a familiar trouble spot for him.

Kyle Busch, who entered the STP 400 with five consecutive top-five finishes and a victory last week at Texas, battled a loose car for much of the day, then left the race after colliding with Joey Logano on Lap 105.

“Oh yeah,” Busch said to crew chief Dave Rogers over his radio when Rogers asked him if he was all right after he and Logano met head-on in Turn 4. “It’s Kansas, right?”

Busch has never fared well at Kansas, entering the race with an average finish of 21st place. He had some reason to think this year might be different, if results over the past five races were in any indication: before winning at Texas last week, he had also won at California, finished fourth at Las Vegas and fifth at Martinsville.

Busch described his car as “snappy loose,” before his day ended. He had already spun once on the backstretch of Lap 6.

“(There was) absolutely no grip for me,” said Busch. “You’re running third and doing fine, (the car is) a little tight and you spin out. Just trying to get back up to the front and making some gains, but the car just snaps out from you every corner.”

Busch would finish 38th and drop from second to seventh in the points standings.

The wreck on Lap 105 was also costly for Logano, who is facing a 25-point penalty (pending an appeal) after his team was caught with illegal parts last week at Texas.

“We weren’t going to gain many points this weekend, but we were going to try to rally for the best possible finish we could get out of it,” he said. “But it’s not good for us.”

Logano said he was unable to avoid Busch as he spun in front of him on Lap 4.

“He was spinning out and I saw it the whole time,” said Logano. “I saw he got loose and thought, ‘OK, he’s going to come back across,’ and he didn’t. It looked like he was going to stay up there because he kind of slapped the wall with the right side after he hit it the first time, so I’m like, ‘All right, I’m going to gun it and get by him here,’ and as soon as I committed to that I saw him start coming back down. At that point you’re just lined up to him and hit him a ton.”
