Engine problems push Kyle Busch, Hamlin to back of field
Sunday, Mar. 03, 2013
AVONDALE, Ariz. It was a rough day for Toyotas motor program. For separate reasons, two of Toyotas top drivers Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin had to head to the back of the field in Sundays Subway Fresh Fit 500 because for motor replacements.
Both situations involved valve springs, which are routinely replaced between qualifying and the race in Sprint Cup. In Hamlins case, the mechanics found a part failure that required replacing the engine. With Busch, who won Saturdays Nationwide event, human error in re-assembling the engine cause the replacement.
Based on qualifying, Busch would have started fourth in Sundays field and Hamlin eighth. Those were two of Toyotas top three entries, behind pole-sitter Mark Martin.
