Hmiel returns to racing

Thursday, Jan. 03, 2013

Former NASCAR driver Shane Hmiel, paralyzed in wreck during qualifying for a U.S. Auto Club race Oct. 9, 2010, in Indiana, will return to racing Jan. 26 at Rockingham Speedway.

With the help of Accessible Racing, Hmiel will get back behind the wheel of a race car.

“I can’t wait for this event at Rockingham Speedway,” said Hmiel. “I have had a lot of people in my corner pulling for me since I got injured and without all my family, friends, and fans support and prayers I wouldn’t be where I am today on my road to recovery.”

Accessible Racing is the brainchild Brian Hanaford and was built to help disabled veterans and civilians break down barriers.

Hanaford suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident and after years of recovery, he decided to modify a race car to assist the physically challenged.
