CONCORD Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., took the lead in the sixth lap and eased to his fourth straight victory at The Dirt Track in the Late Models feature, closing the World of Outlaws World Finals on Saturday night.
Owens, who also won the Late Models feature race on Friday night, finished comfortably ahead of Tim McCreadie and third-place Darrell Lanigan, who wrapped up the series points championship for the second time. Lanigan finished third in the point standings in 2011.
I had an awesome car tonight, Owens said. I think any of the fans out here could have driven it and won. We went extra hard tonight and the track was good. Its a lot of fun when you can actually pass cars.
Owens wasnt on the receiving end of that very often in the 50-lap feature. He took the advantage on the sixth lap and held it the rest of the way.
In the Sprint Car feature, Dale Blaney of Hartford, Ohio, took advantage of a break in the late laps to hold off Paul McMahan at the finish line for his first victory at The Dirt Track.
Blaney was in the top three for most of the race before leader Craig Dollansky hit the wall in Turn 4 of the 23rd lap with a blown right rear tire. The crash also took out third-place Stevie Smith, who had started on the pole. That left Blaney in the lead on the restart and he held off a strong finish by McMahan, who had started 22nd in the 27-car field, to win by 0.16 seconds.
I was just trying to protect myself in the last two laps, said Blaney, who had led in Friday nights feature on three separate occasions before his evening ended with a blown tire. I just ran as hard as I could. I figured he would try to catch me inside. It was just a physical race.
Donny Schatz finished 25th, but wrapped up the circuits points title, his fifth overall and his first since 2009.
In the SuperDIRT Big Block Modifieds finals race, Brett Hearn of Sussex, N.J., came out on top of a back-and-forth duel with Australian driver Peter Britten in the final laps of a race that had begun with a nine-car pileup before the end of the first lap.
Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, N.Y., finished fourth to claim the circuits points championship for a third straight year.
Hearn and Britten dueled one-on-one for much of the race, through an increasing amount of lapped traffic as the 40-lap feature went on. Sheppard briefly made it a three-car race for the lead, but Hearn passed Britten to grab the lead for good in Lap 32, and held off the Australian after a restart with six laps to go to take the checkered flag.
The car was under me really well tonight, Hearn said. It wasnt getting away from me at all, so I wasnt concerned.
Britten said he was disappointed, because we led the race for so long, but we knew what he (Hearn) was capable of. I had a good car tonight, but it wasnt quite good enough.
