Speeds from Daytona 500 'Happy Hour'
Friday, Feb. 18, 2011
A pair of Richard Childress Racing aces hooked up Saturday during the final Sprint Cup practice, pushing speeds back over the 200-mph mark at Daytona International Speedway.
Participation rebounded from Friday's lull, when only a handful of Cup drivers ventured onto the 2.5-mile speedway's new surface. Thirty-seven of the Cup cars expected to start Sunday were out during the "Happy Hour" practice session Saturday.
The RCR Chevrolets of Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer posted identical laps, at 200.316 mph.
Regan Smith, also in a Chevrolet, was atop the chart for best average speed over a 10-lap run, at 195.285 mph.
Mark Martin was the fastest on Friday, posting a lap at 196.803 mph in the final practice. That was just ahead of Jimmie Johnsons 196.794, also in the final session.
Earlier Friday, Burton put up a 196.648 mph lap and Paul Menard was shown at 196.644.
Joey Logano and Kasey Kahne both ran just over 200 mph on Wednesday.
