Tom Higgins
Racing writer and historian Tom Higgins shares some of his favorite stories about NASCAR's legendary figures and more. A tip the hat in this case, an open-faced crash helmet to news partner WCNC for the video work.
The newly crowned champion had a couple of media pals along on the trip back to Charlotte. Tom Higgins was one of them and he recalls that there were some issues initially, at least with the accommodations.
Darrell Waltrip was known to many fans simply as "Jaws" and his rivals didn't get any slack. But Waltrip soon found that Earnhardt gave as good as he got, Higgins says.
There was the time, Higgins says, when NASCAR founder "Big Bill" France was at a loss for words. Well, for one word anyway.
Higgins and Junior Johnson have known one another for a long time. The newspaperman once asked the team owner's opinion about up-and-coming drivers. And there were two who stood out.
