Poker players to aid safety effort

Ray Evernham Enterprises will host a charity poker tournament on March 23 to benefit the teen driving school founded by Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert.
Herbert founded the non-profit B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe) after the deaths of his two sons in a single-vehicle wreck on Jetton Road in Cornelius.
B.R.A.K.E.S. offers its Teen Pro-Active Driving School for free to every family who attends. With schools scheduled throughout 2010, the organization expects to provide the hands-on training to at least 1,200 teenagers this year, Herbert said.
The school initially reached hundreds of teenagers in the Carolinas. With support this year from the National Hot Rod Association, Herbert said, driving schools will also be held in California.
He said parents from every part of the country have requested the driving school be brought to their states.
“Our hope is that, through fundraisers like this, we will be able to take the school to even more areas of the country next year,” Herbert said.
The tournament will begin at 6:30 p.m., with cards in the air at 7 p.m. A ticket to play is $250, which includes the buy-in, dinner and three drink tickets. The event will also include a raffle and entertainment.
Players will receive an additional $250 in chips for bringing a non-playing guest for a $40 donation. Register by calling (704) 732-8950.
