2010 Truck series preview
Monday, Feb. 08, 2010
NASCAR's Truck series teams are at work, getting ready for the season opener at Daytona International Speedway. Here's a fast look at some of the people, issues and more:
10 to watch
1. Ron Hornaday, Kevin Harvick Inc
Hornaday earned his fourth championship in 2009 and has to be a favorite for title No. 5.
2. Matt Crafton, ThorSport Racing
Although Crafton didn't earn a victory last season, he ran up front virtually every race. He'll need to win to catch Hornaday, however.
3. Mike Skinner, Randy Moss Motorsports
Skinner has come close in recent seasons to a second series. But is time running out?
4. Todd Bodine, Germain Racing
Since winning the title in 2006, Bodine has remained in the hunt, but Germain sponsorship problems could hurt his chances this season.
5. Justin Lofton, Red Horse Racing
Last season's ARCA champion is making his full-time venture into NASCAR competition this season.
6. Johnny Sauter, ThorSport Racing
With a year under his belt in the series, expect Sauter to be contending for wins.
7. Tayler Malsam, Kyle Busch Motorsports
Malsam has shown he is fast and he will be driving what will surely be fast equipment.
8. Austin Dillon, Richard Childress Racing
Driving the historic No. 3 will gain Dillon an instant fan base. Strong performances and a possible rookie of the year title would boost it more.
9. Ricky Carmichael, Turner Motorsports
The former motocross champion ran several races last season with KHI and has been developing quickly. Expect more improvement.
10. David Starr, Randy Moss Motorsports
Starr did well at HT Motorsports last season and should contend for wins at RMM.
What they're saying
"We had a great year last year, but I think that this year ... we have a little more funding, and a good program."
– Mike Skinner
"I feel like the depth of his team is twice as good as it was last year as far as depth and experience from the mechanics and things that are working on it."
– Team co-owner Kevin Harvick talking about Hornaday
"My dream was to come to Daytona to win a race at Daytona. I don't care if it's on a bicycle. I'm going to still try to win a race here."
– Hornaday on racing at Daytona
3 to watch
1. Austin Dillon – Drove in four different stock car series as an RCR development driver in 2009 and had top-15 finishes in two Truck races. He also had two runner-up finishes in a pair of ARCA starts.
2. Justin Lofton – Won six times last season on his way to the ARCA championship. He's also a former standout in mountain bikes and late models.
3. Kyle Busch Motorsports – With Kyle Busch as owner, expect the Trucks to be fast, up front and contending for wins.
