Born: Nov.25, 1940, in Mocksville, N.C.
Residence: On Lake Norman in Cornelius, N.C., where the Gibbs family has maintained its primary home for the past 15 years.
As NFL head coach: Won three Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins from 1981-1992 while starting three different quarterbacks… Returned to coach the Redskins from 2004-2007 and earned two playoff appearances…. Retired from coaching again following 2007 season to spend more time with his family…. Panthers owner Jerry Richardson wanted Gibbs to become his first head coach in 1995, but at the time Gibbs did not want to return to coaching.
As NASCAR owner: Started Joe Gibbs Racing in 1992… First big victory came in 1993 at the Daytona 500 with Dale Jarrett as driver…. Won three NASCAR Cup championships in 2000 (Terry Labonte), 2002 (Tony Stewart) and 2005 (Stewart again) as his drivers… Older son J.D. Gibbs now serves as day-to-day head at JGR, while younger son Coy has started a motocross team under the JGR umbrella.

Family: Wife Pat; sons J.D. and Coy; eight grandchildren.
