Stepmother files civil lawsuit

Thursday, Jul. 30, 2009

In another twist in the Jeremy Mayfield saga, his stepmother filed suit against him Wednesday in Superior Court in Statesville for what she said were slanderous and defamatory comments made about her to the media.

Lisa Mayfield filed the civil suit seeking compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $10,000 each and “for such other relief as the Court may deem just and proper.” Lisa Mayfield also asks the court to assess the cost of the court action be paid by her stepson.

Jeremy Mayfield recently made several disparaging comments about his stepmother after an affidavit she signed in which she said she witnessed her stepson use methamphetamine more than 30 times over a period of seven years.

Jeremy Mayfield was indefinitely suspended by NASCAR after a failed drug test in May in which the racing organization said he tested positive for meth. He claimed the failed test was the result of his use of an over-the-counter allergy medicine and a prescription medication, Adderall.

A federal judge issued an injunction to overturn the driver's suspension, but the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the injunction and reinstated his suspension last week.

In her suit, Lisa Mayfield cited several media interviews in which her stepson called her a “whore,” accused her of shooting his father (his death was ruled a suicide) and accused NASCAR officials of paying her for her affidavit.

There was no immediate response from Mayfield's attorneys.
