Road course aces rarely the winning hand
Thursday, Jun. 18, 2009
The first of two road-course races of the season will be Sunday, and that means another visit to the Sprint Cup Series by “specialists.”
At least five veteran road racers are entered for the race at Infineon Raceway – Boris Said, Ron Fellows, Max Papis, Patrick Carpentier and Brian Simo.
Although road-course aces have faired well in recent years, the last non-series regular to win a Cup road-course event was Mark Donohue in 1973 at Riverside, Calif. Four-time series champion Jeff Gordon leads all Cup drivers with road-course wins – five at Infineon and four at Watkins Glen, N.Y.
