Stewart, Newman advance cause
Sunday, May. 03, 2009
RICHMOND, Va. - Not only does Tony Stewart continue to perform well but teammate Ryan Newman has now joined him in the top 12 of the series standings.
Stewart finished second in Saturday night's race, his second runner-up showing in the past three races, and sits third in the series standings, just 39 points behind leader Jeff Gordon.
Newman got off to a slower start than his Stewart-Hass Racing owner, but finished fourth Saturday night, his second consecutive top-five finish. He has gained 23 spots in past seven races and sits 10th in points.
"I think Ryan would have had the same kind of runs we had the first four races. He just had really weird bad luck happen, just weird things happen," Stewart said.
"After that fourth week was over, we've been basically running the same pace."
Said Newman: "I told the guys if we keep doing this we'll get what we want, and obviously we want to be in Victory Lane. We showed that we could lead and we had a car that could race with Kyle (Busch), no doubt."
