On one of these Facebook things I saw this question: If you were another person would you be friends with you? I think that is an outstanding question. After thinking about it a lot, I decided that I most likely would, but that I would also drive myself crazy quite often.
The most amazing thing I've seen live in more than 25 years as a sportswriter was Jack Nicklaus winning the 1986 Masters by shooting nothing on the back nine on Sunday. The most memorable thing I've seen in 12 seasons covering NASCAR was Dale Earnhardt winning the 1998 Daytona 500 and having every team come out and congratulate him.
I believe anybody who tells you he is unbiased is a liar. Being human gives you bias, and you can't avoid that. The best you can ever hope to be is fair. I do not consider myself a race fan. To be a fan, you have to be willing to put up with hardships like high ticket prices, ridiculous hotel rates and obscene concession prices to follow the sport. Unless and until I do that, I am not worthy of that title.
Sports don't matter in the grand scheme of things. But in the moment, when things are just right, they're the most important thing in the world. That's what makes them so great.
