RICHMOND, Va. -- It was not a good weekend for Jeff Burton.
He and his No. 31 Richard Childress Racing team struggled through practice and qualifying on Friday and barely had a chance to begin making progress in Sunday’s race at Richmond when his engine blew after 139 laps.
Burton was credited with a 43rd place finish and dropped from second to fifth in points, trailing leader Jeff Gordon by 339 after 10 races.
"I broke the engine. I don’t know why I broke the engine,” Burton said. “We were only turning like 3,800 rpms here with this car. It just ate itself up.”
