WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- In the span of a week, Patrick Carpentier has had a crash course in NASCAR’s biggest series.
He won the pole for last weekend’s Busch race at Montreal and finished second driving for Amando Fitz then received a phone call Monday from Ray Evernham asking if he’s like to try again in this weekend’s Cup road course event at Watkins Glen.
Carpentier, former Indy and ChampCar World Series driver, accepted but did not get a chance to qualify because of rain. The team still made the field and Carpentier will start 40th on Sunday.
"From Montreal it’s been like a fairy tale. Two weeks ago we were just sitting at home and we took a chance with the one race, Montreal, and everything worked out," Carpentier said. "I want to say thanks -- I met with Scott Riggs -- to him for giving up his position this weekend to give me a chance to drive his car."
