Short takes from the Martinsville race weekend:

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s engine gave up on the green-white-checkered restart and he finished 23rd. “We think we broke a valve spring early in the race,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “It was on seven cylinders.”

Peter Sospenzo, crew chief for driver Robby Gordon, was transported to Martinsville Memorial Hospital prior to the start of Sunday’s race for treatment of stroke-like symptoms, NASCAR officials said. Sospenzo was being held overnight.
