Johnson up, Edwards down in rankings
Top three drivers hold positions after Martinsville
Monday, Mar. 30, 2009
The top 35 Sprint Cup teams following the Goody's 500 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. Teams are ranked in terms of their performance and their potential for success this season. (Last week's ranking in parentheses).
1. (1) Kyle Busch (car No. 18)
Finished 24th at Martinsville and still No. 1? Yes. His two wins keep him here.
2. (2) Jeff Gordon (car No. 24)
Keeps racking up the points but he's still looking for that streak-snapping victory.
3. (3) Clint Bowyer (car No. 33)
Another solid run for a team that looks more and more like contenders each week.
4. (8) Jimmie Johnson (car No. 48)
Bump and run? Shove and go? Call it what you will, but it's a win at Martinsville.
5. (4) Kurt Busch (car No. 2)
Again, his win at Atlanta gives him this spot over those who're nipping at his heels.
6. (9) Tony Stewart (car No. 14)
This team continues to impress. If it continues to improve people need to look out.
7. (10) Denny Hamlin (car No. 11)
Could not have handled himself better after his disappointing loss at Martinsville.
8. (6) Kevin Harvick (car No. 29)
Odd to see team struggle on short tracks the way it did at Bristol and Martinsville.
9. (5) Carl Edwards (car No. 99)
This team needs to have a good run at Texas, the type of track where it has excelled.
10. (7) Matt Kenseth (car No. 17)
The going has been rough after this team started the season with back-to-back wins
11. (12) David Reutimann (car No. 00)
Hanging around the top 12. The longer he stays there the more confidence grows.
