Gaston hall to honor David Poole, others
Thursday, Sep. 17, 2009
David Poole, the late motorsports writer and broadcaster, will be among those honored by the Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame on Monday.
The David Poole Service Award will go to longtime youth baseball coach Mack Hanna. Hanna’s son, Mark, will accept the award from UNC-Chapel Hill women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell.
Poole, a Charlotte Observer and ThatsRacin.com writer, grew up in West Gastonia and played on teams coached by Hanna, the award’s first recipient.
The hall, in its 25th year, also will salute a leading supporter of the county’s sports programs with its annual Bennie Cunningham Fan of the Year Award and induct four men. They are longtime golf broadcaster John Derr, Clemson golf coach Larry Penley, former amateur golf champion Charlie Smith and former Virginia Union basketball coach Dave Robbins.
Broadcaster Mark Packer, who played college golf with Penley, will be the keynote speaker.
