Racing while wet? Wheeler's thoughts
Thursday, Jul. 02, 2009
Some ideas from former Lowe's Motor Speedway and Speedway Motorsports Inc. president H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, who once worked with Firestone tire's racing program, on keeping the green out when it rains:
Goodyear most certainly could develop a tire for the rain on ovals. Big track speeds would be reduced about 30 mph. The secret to the tire is a tread similar to Formula One tires that displace the water. You would need to run new tires and lower the air pressure.
You would need a product like Rain X, whatever the brand, for the windshields. Remember, the cars at Le Mans with full windshields run ... with little problem seeing by the drivers.
Shields for brakes may have to be used because they would definitely not work the same.
Pit stops would be slower but everyone would adjust accordingly.
