My two cents' worth | David Poole on the Pettys move

The Charlotte Observer

Wednesday, Nov. 07, 2007

You know it had to be very hard for Petty Enterprises to decide to move its base of operations out of Level Cross into the former shops of Robert Yates Racing in Mooresville, N.C.

Richard Petty, in talking about the move on Wednesday, reminded everyone that he was born in the house that sits right beside the historic shops. That's where his father, Lee, started racing's greatest family empire under a shed with a dirt floor back in 1949.

Cars built in that shop have won 268 races and 10 championships in what is now the Nextel Cup series. You don't just walk away from history like that without taking stock of what you're doing.

But as much as the sport has changed over the past few years, the stark reality is that the Pettys faced a very simple choice.

They could do what they need to do to make more history.

Or they could be history.
