Harvick's fuel pump fails

Sunday, Apr. 01, 2007

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Before Kevin Harvick experienced problems with the energy-absorbing foam, he was running in the top five of Sunday's race when he lost all fuel pressure.

It turns out Harvick’s No. 29 Chevrolet had the same problem which dealt Tony Stewart a serious blow last weekend – the piece that joins the two pieces of the new cable driven fuel pump failed.

Like Stewart, Harvick had to go to the garage for repairs and ended up several laps down.

Teams have been running the cable driven fuel pump since Daytona, but they are not required to run it. The can still use the old fuel pump, said Brett Bodine, NASCAR’s director of cost research.
